Defence Diplomacy: From Akash Missiles to Submarine Support India Strengthens Strategic Ties with Brazil and Argentina Through Defence Cooperation

Date :01-07-2025

India’s defence diplomacy is taking center stage during PM Modi’s 2025 five-nation tour, with Brazil and Argentina emerging as key partners in Latin America. The focus? Strategic defence exports, joint production, and rare earth cooperation.

In Brazil, India is expected to showcase its  indigenous Akash surface-to-air missile system, Garuda artillery guns, and coastal surveillance technology. These systems not only highlight India’s growing defence manufacturing capabilities but also align with Brazil’s interest in modernizing its military infrastructure. Talks are also likely to include collaboration on maintaining Brazil’s Scorpene-class submarines—originally built with French assistance but now potentially supported by Indian expertise.

Argentina, meanwhile, is exploring defence and mineral cooperation. This marks PM Modi’s first full bilateral meeting with President Javier Milei, signaling a new era in Indo-Argentine relations. Argentina’s vast reserves of lithium and rare earth elements make it a strategic partner for India’s energy and defence sectors.

This defence diplomacy push is part of India’s broader strategy to expand its influence in the Global South, reduce dependency on traditional arms suppliers, and promote indigenous defence technologies on the world stage.

Stay tuned for more updates from PM Modi’s tour as India continues to forge powerful partnerships across continents.
